Enduring Legacies and Obligation

"In recent weeks, President Pinera had said that while the military has been assigned all blame for the dictatorship, there are still civilians who benefited from the regime but who have never taken responsibility. In the end, he said, the country needs both justice and forgiveness."

  • Do you agree or disagree with this idea, that those who benefited should be held responsible?
  • How does the call for justice connect to the call for forgiveness?
  • What does this quote say about where the country of Chile's citizen's fall in their Universe of Obligation? Who is in and or out of their universe? Why do you say that?
It is important to have justice for the people who are benefiting the regime. This is important because if this happens again, other people wont be tempted to benefit in the regime. If you benefit from this, you had a part of what happened. Just like the David Cash video about the casino and his friend, David did nothing but he is still blamed because he could have tried to stop his friend, and in the regime, there are some people who were bystanders who could have done something to stop the regime. Victims need justice, and perpetrators need forgiveness.
