Based on your opinion, studies of past events, etc. Ponder the question below and respond with one paragraph of thoughtful analysis. You CAN use I language for this:
Why do people choose to participate in horrific events?
I think people choose to participate in horrific events because sometimes, they may not have a choice like if they do not participate, they will be killed or tortured until they participate. There is also blackmail which forces them to participate or else one of their family members may be killed. Peer pressure could influence a person to participate, because a person could participate in the horrific events and influence another friend/family member to participate.

Trauma
In your opinion, what is the best way to get over trauma? Why?
In my opinion, the best way to get over trauma is by talking about what is causing the trauma kind of like how a psychiatrist would. I think this is the best way since when people talk about what is troubling them, they get used to hearing about it and eventually the trauma will go away. They should talk about it and experience a little bit of it like if they are traumatized form drowning, they should get used to climbing into a pool or swimming. This is a good way for them to overcome fear and get over trauma.

Enduring Legacies and Obligation
"In recent weeks, President Pinera had said that while the military has been assigned all blame for the dictatorship, there are still civilians who benefited from the regime but who have never taken responsibility. In the end, he said, the country needs both justice and forgiveness."
- Do you agree or disagree with this idea, that those who benefited should be held responsible?
- How does the call for justice connect to the call for forgiveness?
- What does this quote say about where the country of Chile's citizen's fall in their Universe of Obligation? Who is in and or out of their universe? Why do you say that?
It is important to have justice for the people who are benefiting the regime. This is important because if this happens again, other people wont be tempted to benefit in the regime. If you benefit from this, you had a part of what happened. Just like the David Cash video about the casino and his friend, David did nothing but he is still blamed because he could have tried to stop his friend, and in the regime, there are some people who were bystanders who could have done something to stop the regime. Victims need justice, and perpetrators need forgiveness.

Enduring Legacies & Voice
What acts of revolution/ rebellion did you see in the Nostalgia of Light?
In your opinion, which act of preserving history was the most effective, and why?`
The revolution/rebellion I saw in Nostalgia of Light were the Arpilleras. The Arpilleras had a lot of symbolism that could explain their argument better than words could. The movie is an act of revolution/rebellion that does not include violence. They are trying to learn about the history and after the Pinochet regime, the government tried to erase all the history. Archaeology is a good way of preserving history. The one guy measured the measurements o the concentration camps and then drew them on paper and then tore them and memorized them. That way, when the government tried to make the concentration camps seem like they never existed, the guy blew their cover. The ground is so dry that it is very easy to pick things out of the ground. People are still trying to digging through the ground to find an artifact to show that their loved ones were there. People do this for closure. It is scary that the government is trying to hide this history by destroying the evidence.

When you look at the Arpilleras work, do you think that they count as acts of revolution and rebellion? Do they count as voice? Why/ why not?
When I look at the Arpilleras work, I think they do count as acts of revolution and rebellion. I think this since there is a lot of symbolism in this art and it is easier to show someone something than to tell them. I think this counts as voice since a picture tells a thousand words.

Memory and Legacy
"Power is the ability to take one's place in whatever discourse [conversation/discussion] is essential to action and the right to have one's part matter"
-Carolyn Heilbrun
- How does this quote help to explain how long it took to unearth the Congolese Genocide? Why do you think it took so long?
Heilbrun is saying that when someone has enough power, they are able to manipulate people's mind to believe whatever you say. An example of this is like when King Leopold caused genocide among the Congolese people. King Leopold was from Belgium which was in Europe, and Europe had a lot of power during that time which made them convince people that nothing bad was really happening.
